PAVLOF, Alaska Low-level eruptive activity at an Aleutian volcano prompted the Alaska Volcano Observatory to raise the alert level from an "advisory" to a "watch."
Researchers observed "vigorous, steam-rich degassing" on web camera images of Pavlof Volcano Thursday morning. A pilot also reported minor ash emissions, which AVO confirmed using satellite images. This prompted the organization to raise the Aviation Color Code to Orange.
A mix of steam and ash is currently below 15,000 feet. Although eruptive activity is relatively low at the moment, an increase could happen without warning, according to AVO. It is monitoring the situation.
Pavlof Volcano is 30 miles northeast of King Cove and 590 miles southwest of Anchorage
