[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (August 27)

2014: A large southerly swell from Hurricane Marie produced surf of 15 to 18 feet from Newport Beach to Huntington Beach from this day to 8/28.
The Wedge at Newport Beach had sets of 25 to 30 feet.
Coastal flooding occurred at Seal Beach on this day, and reached into some homes.
South Laguna Beach reported major beach erosion.


2011:
Scattered high based thunderstorms moved across Imperial county during the late evening hours on August 27th.
The storms generated strong and gusty outflow winds, especially across far eastern Imperial county near the lower Colorado river valley.
Peak wind gusts were measured in excess of 60 mph.

2011:  Two severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for locations in the Indian Wells Valley in Kern County, mainly around Ridgecrest and Inyokern.
A 58 mph wind gust was recorded at Indian Wells Canyon, or about 15 miles northwest of Ridgecrest.
Flash flooding occurred on Garlock Road just west of U.S. Highway 395, about 20 miles south of Ridgecrest.

2010:
Severe thunderstorms affected a portion of southeast California.
Hail to ping pong ball size was reported by the public in El Centro and Brawley.
Also in Brawley, a large water tank was rolled 100 feet.

2010: Monsoonal thunderstorms pummeled the Bullhead City, AZ, area in the Colorado River Valley near the AZ-CA border.
68 mph winds blew down powerlines in Bullhead City proper.
Several awnings blew off mobile homes due to thunderstorm winds.
1" diameter hail fell in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
US95 was washed out by a flash flood 10 miles south of the Laughlin Cut-Off.
A swiftwater rescue of 5 people occurred Riverview Drive due to a flashflood.

2005: The Well Fire was of unknown origin 20 miles north of Tehachapi in the Kern County Mountains. The fire reached 120 acres in size.
The cost to fight the fire was unknown but no injuries occurred nor structures lost.

2003:
Thunderstorms developed in the mountains each day starting on 8.25 and ending on this day.
Flooding closed Hwy. 38 in Big Bear City, roads near Guatay, routes S2 and S22 near Ranchita, Hwy. 78 east of Julian (from rock slides and mud slides) and streets in Borrego Springs and Campo.

1998: While temperatures were only above normal, humidities continued to be much above normal for the Central and Southern San Joaquin Valley. 
A student athlete succumbed to heat exhaustion apparently from a Thursday afternoon football practice ... passing away during the night and discovered early on Friday morning the 28th.

1981: Half Moon Bay had a low temperature of 41° F.

1973: It was 55° F in Borrego Springs, the lowest temperature on record for August.

1972: A dust storm resulted in visibility near zero on I-5 in Kern County.

1954: It was 52° F in Palm Springs, the lowest temperature on record for August.
This also occurred on 8.30.1957.

1951: A hurricane moving north northwestward just off the west coast of Baja California moved northeastward into northern Baja California and dissipated.
Moisture from this tropical cyclone resulted in rainfall of 2"-5" in the mountains and deserts starting on this day and ending on 8.29.
A daily record of 1.1" fell in Borrego Springs.
Many roads were washed out in the Imperial Valley, but otherwise no major damage occurred.
This occurred during the El Niño of 1951-52.

1944: It was 107° at San Luis Obispo, establishing an all-time high for August.

1924: Reno, NV, recorded a high of 100° F.
