2007: Very strong Santa Ana winds developed on this day and continued through 10/23.
A gust of 85 mph was recorded at Fremont Canyon, 79 mph at San Bernardino, 75 mph at Descanso and Mira Loma, and 74 mph at Fallbrook and Rancho Cucamonga.
Some locations experienced winds at least 45 mph for more than 36 consecutive hours.
Winds caused at least $60 million in damage and destruction to buildings, fences, vehicles, etc.
The devastating wildfires of 2007 were fanned by these winds.
These fires caused one million Californians to evacuate, the largest mass evacuation in California history.
Several notable fires that started on this day include the Witch Creek, Harris, and Santiago Fires.
The Witch Creek fire eventually grew into the sixth largest wildfire in California since 1932, consuming 197,990 acres, 1,650 structures, injuring 40, and causing two fatalities.
The combined cost of damages and fighting the fire was estimated at more than $1 billion.
The Harris and Santiago Fires would scorch 90,440 and 28,445 acres respectively and cost a combined $43 million to fight.
2004: A waterspout was spotted two miles southwest of North Island (San Diego).
2000: Frontal passage through Interior Central California provided gusty wind along the west side of the San Joaquin Valley where wind speeds up to 41 MPH were reported at Kettleman Hills and 37 MPH at Navy Lemoore.
Other reports were received regarding gusty winds that felled some trees in the Madera County foothills around Bass Lake with speeds to 61 MPH at Crane Flat Lookout at 1200PST.
In the SE Kern Desert, Mojave had localized gusts to 58 MPH along with Edwards AFB gusts in excess of 45 MPH.
Wind lingered longer in the Indian Wells Valley of Kern County with local gusts to near 60 MPH at Laural Mountain at 1713 PST/
1998: The Lookout II Fire, an escaped prescribed wildfire in the Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park, near Mineral King burned 436 acres before being contained on 10/25/98.
Cost $348K was spent suppressing it with no fatalities and no structures lost.
1985: Winds gusting to 90 mph at the Wilkerson Ranch near Bishop, CA damaged several roofs and tore down tree limbs.
5.5" of snow fell at Bridgeport (Mono County seat).
