Speaking of the LA Times, the newspaper did take the on-line Free Republic to court several years ago. The Washington Post also did at the same time. The case was settled by FR agreeing not to post complete articles on the website (the same rule applies to their members). They post links only. The vast majority of the news groups I subscribe to do the same, and do not allow members to post complete articles.
