[californiadisasters] Admin Read: Don't Get Complacent!

It is a rather well-known truism when it comes to landslides that they more often than not happen on a beautiful sunny day.
There is a good reason for that, to wit, it often takes many hours or even a number of days for water to percolate down through various levels of soil and reach a contact between two layers that is a weak one.
Once saturated, either the weight of the water held in the soil reaches the point where the force of friction no longer holds the two sides in contact and gravity does its thing and we have a landslide on a sunny day a number of days following the most recent storm.
The River of Moisture was swept away by the Big Storm which in turn is now rapidly exiting stage right.
We have a couple of days before the next storm but make no mistake, landslides and rockfalls will continue to occur even in the absence of rainfall.
I state this to warn those of you living or otherwise transiting landslide-prone regions to exercise due caution in the coming days.
At present it appears more rain is on tap this weekend but it's too soon to be certain on specifics so stay tuned.
