Part of it is that the Kiwis do things a little differently than here. The official announcement is made after the bodies are identified, not when they're placed in the morgue. Since not all counts are 'official' there will be discrepancies.
This is according to one of the commercial (not ham) NZ radio stations I listened to early this morning via the net.
While it doesn't change anything, the death toll IS one of the defining statistics that interests a lot of folks and is often used as an indicator for severity. Mayhaps that says something about humans?
