Yesterday this incident chewed its way up to the crest of the Santa Ynez Mountains and nearing the time it might have slopped over to the Santa Ynez Valley side of the range, the Sundowner Winds arose and drove the fire down the mountain to Highway 101 which it jumped into the median of until an Erickson Skycrane quenched the spot which can be seen on the internet. The fire generated tremendous pyrocumulous clouds at the unusual time of day of after sundown as it expanded the fire's size to over 4,000 acres. Citrus and avocado orchards have been damaged and the El Capitan Water Treatment Plant was destroyed last night. With Sundowner Winds expected again tonight with only 5% containment from a much larger fire perimeter and a heat wave approaching, Santa Barbara County has declared a state of emergency. The smoke from this fire is currently impacting the LA Basin prompting concerned calls from residents unaware of its source.

Now being reported variously as 1,100 or 1,500 acres but certainly actually much more than that... 0% contained and in full defensive mode as extreme and erratic fire behavior continues through the night. On Wed, Jun 15, 2016 at 11:35 PM, Kim Noyes <kimnoyes@gmail.com> wrote:Fire was previously pegged at 300 acres but not up to 500 acres.... but probably the true size is 10 times that number. The Scherpa Fire is named for the nearby Rancho La Scherpa Christian Conference Center in a private inholding within the Los Padres National Forest Santa Barbara District. The fire has thus far consumed 200 acres with no containment and faces a switch to Sundowner Winds overnight which will drive it down the mountain and over US101 and to the Pacific Ocean if this occurs. At one point a few hours ago the fire was spotting up to a mile ahead of the head of the fire and thus some parts of the fire are not contiguous with the main fire. Evacuations are in effect:Evacuation Instructions for Vegetation Fire Burning Near the Top of Refugio Road
A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for Refugio Canyon, Venadito Canyon and Las Flores Canyon including the refinery due to a vegetation fire. If you are in this area, please leave the area immediately.
An evacuation warning has been issued for El Capitan Canyon and El Capitan State Beach. Residents in this area should be ready in case conditions change and they are required to leave. If you are in the evacuation warning area, now is the time to gather your family, pets and personal belongings in case you are ordered to evacuate.
Reverse 911 calls were issued to 235 phone lines which include both the mandatory and evacuation warning areas.
