Saw the column from my aerie in the high west slope Sierras (just now back at home wondering why I didn't just stay)... it capped out later in the day.
From our friends at Airtankers Yahoo Group:
New start in the Mono Lake area. The "Marina Fire" was first reported at 05:30 this morning (6-24) just North of Lee Vining,CA. The fire is burning in very steep terrain with heavy Pinyon Pine and thick Sagebrush fuels. This afternoon the fire was pushed by strong canyon winds causing the fire to grow to about 600 acres at last report. The smoke plume could be seen as far away as Carson City,Nv and Washoe Valley,Nv. The Tioga Lodge has been evacuated but no structures are currently threatened as the fire continues to burn up towards the top of the ridge near Mono dome and Lee Vining Peak. Highway 395 is closed North of Lee Vining and is not scheduled to be re-opened until 0600 on Saturday (6-25). Tankers reported working the fire were: S2T's #82,#83,#88,#89 with reload out of Columbia,CA. Bae-146's Tankers #01 and #10 were also sent North for at least one load each on the fire.
