At about this time on this date in 1995, Diablo Winds gusting to 40-50 m.p.h. whipped a smoldering illegal campfire started by four boys three days earlier who mistakenly thought they snuffed it out into a raging inferno that destroyed 45 homes, including many artist studios, along with 12,354 acres of brush, forest, and coastal grasslands and burned across a large swath of Point Reyes National Seashore en route to the Big Firebreak (Pacific Ocean). On the same day another fire started to the north on Highway 20 in eastern Mendocino County and whipped by the same Diablo Winds burned southeast over the mountains towards Talmage and the eastern Yokayo Valley burning several thousand acres in heavy fuels but no structures.
