[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (September 14)

2015: A monsoonal thunderstorm winds blew 5 cars of a freight train off their track near Bannock parallel to National Trails Highway (Old Route 66) just west of junction with US95 northwest of Needles.

2014: The Courtney fire located 3 miles East of Oakhurst in Madera County burned toward the community of Bass Lake.
The fire burned 320 acres before being contained on September 22, 2014. This human-caused fire resulted in evacuations of several hundred residents and visitors for several days.
There were 30 residences, 19 outbuildings, 13 vehicles, and 4 recreational vehicles destroyed as well as 4 residences, 3 outbuildings and 2 vehicles damaged.
Cost of containment was $4.4 million. 

2011: A rather large and intimidating funnel cloud was observed near Warner Springs (Riverside Co.).
Ultimately, the funnel never made contact with the ground and was uneventful outside of its appearance.

1997:
A powerful thunderstorm unleashed a destructive wind that wreaked havoc on a small section of Bullhead City, AZ (Colorado River Valley near Needles, CA).
The fierce wind snapped 24 power poles and damaged approximately 80 houses and mobile homes.
Roofs were blown off or damaged, a garage was blown away and numerous awnings were ripped off and hurled through the air.
22 of the homes were condemned. 

1997: Large swell produced by Hurricane Linda slammed into Orange County.
Surf as high as 18 feet was reported at the Wedge in Newport Beach.
Five people were swept off a jetty there and were carried 300 yards out to sea before they were rescued by a passing boat.
All of the 5 were injured, with one left in critical condition after nearly drowning. 

1974: Twelve feet of water smashes through Eldorado Canyon, 50 miles southeast of Las Vegas (between Boulder, NV, and Bullhead City, AZ), killing 9 people at Nelson's Landing.
Everything in the flood's path is swept into Lake Mohave, including a marina, restaurant, gasoline dock, boats, 50 cars and 20 mobile homes. 

1971: Monterey had a high of 101
° F -- a record for the month.

1971: Inyokern reached 110° F for a high while San Luis Obispo topped out at 112° F establishing an all-time record high temperature.

1969: Heavy rain from Poston to Ehrenberg (Colorado River Valley across border from Blythe, CA) caused extensive crop damage.

1929: The high temperature at Portola was 101° F.
