[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (September 22)

2007: An upper-level low dropped down the coast on the 21st, and moved inland over Southern California the next day.
This low triggered another thunderstorm outbreak, with hail up to 0.88" (nickel-sized) in diameter falling in eastern Kings County during the afternoon of September 22nd, and 0.75" hail falling west of Squaw Valley in Fresno County near the foothills.
Flash flooding occurred in eastern Kings County, central Fresno County, and north-central Tulare County, with scattered reports of road flooding and minor mud/debris flows elsewhere in the central and southern San Joaquin Valley.

2007: As many as eight waterspouts and countless more funnel clouds were seen in one hour along the coast of Orange and San Diego Counties.
Two waterspouts came ashore.
One at Cardiff blew over tents.
Another came ashore at Newport Beach.

1999: Low of 72° F in Fresno.
This is the latest in the year Fresno has had a 70° F or better low temperature.

1999: Moisture from former Hurricane Hilary spread northward into Interior Central California very late on Tuesday, September 21st and over the entire area by Wednesday, September 22nd.   
Very light rain showers were reported as far north as Madera Ranchos in Central Madera County by midnight with some thunderstorm activity. 
In the mid-morning hours of the 22nd, locally heavy rainshowers occurred with thunderstorms primarily in the Tulare County area and North Kern County. 
Spotters reported 0.40" of rain from these showers. 
Only a few hundredths occurred in other Interior Central California Valley locations. 
Lightning strikes throughout the San Joaquin Valley portion of Tulare County caused 9,700 customers to lose power.   
Although rain forecasts were issued with good lead time...some growers in Tulare County were unable to get crews to roll raisins on about 1,000 acres with as much as 50% loss of the crop. 

1990: Mount Hamilton received 0.94" of rain.

1987: A small F1 tornado was spotted 7 miles northeast of Yuma, AZ.
Damage was limited to a lettuce ranch where a steel roof on a storage shed was torn off.
A nearby power pole and transformer was destroyed.

1987: Thunderstorms developed on this day and on 9.23 from San Diego to El Cajon from the remnants of Hurricane Norma.
Rainfall was 0.55" in two hours at Lemon Grove and 0.97" total. 0.7" fell at Lindbergh Field, a record for the date.
Very frequent lightning caused numerous power outages and property damage, and ignited small fires.

1968: The morning low temperature at Reno, NV was 23° F.

1949: Barstow, CA recorded a high temperature of 105° F, setting a daily record. 

1939: A heat wave that started on 9.18 and ended on this day preceded the arrival of a tropical storm called "El Cordonazo."
High temperature records of more than 95° F occurred at San Diego each day, with the highest temperature reaching 106° F on 9.21.
It was 111° F in Santa Ana on this day, the highest temperature on record for September, and the second highest temperature on record.
This also occurred the previous day on 9.21.
Incredibly, 0.02" of rain fell on this second hottest day in history.
On this day the low temperature in LA was 84°, the highest minimum on record (also occurred on 9.30.1906).
Santa Maria established a new record high for the month of 106° F.

1911: Low temperature of 24° F in Yosemite Valley reached, established a record low for this location for September.

1887: Fresno had a record rainfall for the date of 0.47".
This is the oldest rainfall record for Fresno still in the books.
