[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (September 23)

2012: An upper-level low moved through Oregon on September 23rd and dropped into eastern Nevada the next day.
As the associated trough moved through California, the marine layer deepened along the coast and cool marine air spilled into the San Joaquin Valley.
Temperatures cooled several degrees, with Merced and Los Banos only reaching the upper 80s while Bakersfield reached 97° F and Wasco reported 100° F.
The trough also brought gusty winds to the Kern County mountains and deserts during the afternoon of the 24th, with gusts as high as 53 mph.

2011: Off the coast of California, a low-pressure system developed within a ridge and drifted toward the coast.
By September 23rd, the flow around this low drew subtropical moisture into southern and central California.
The ridge remained the dominant large-scale feature over central California, bringing unseasonably warm weather to the region.
Fresno had a high of 101° F on the 23rd, the third, and last time Fresno would experience triple digits in September of that year.
With a very warm and unstable air-mass, thunderstorms developed across the region.
Although there was moisture in the mid-level of the atmosphere, the lowest levels remained dry, and the thunderstorms were mostly dry with numerous lightning strikes.
The lightning triggered several wildfires in Kern County, with a few fires started in Tulare County.
Outflow winds from the thunderstorms toppled power poles in northeast Bakersfield, knocking out power to over three thousand people.
In the Mojave Desert northeast of Mojave, winds blew a big rig over on State Route 58.

2002: Dense fog took hold along the coast and over the coastal waters.
A 44-foot boat lost its way in the fog and ran aground on the rocks at the entrance to San Diego Bay.
No one was injured, but the boat was destroyed.

1999: Light sprinkles and lightning occurred over the Southern San Joaquin Valley floor late the night of the 22nd and early on the morning of the 23rd as thunderstorms moved over the area.
Primary thunderstorm activity was in the surrounding mountain and desert areas.
Two (2) lightning strikes observed by OES Fire official in the vicinity of Crane Flat, NNW of El Portal, in the mid to late afternoon hours.
Both strikes produced small fires but were controlled.
No reported damage other than fire suppression costs.

1987: Thunderstorms developed on 9.22 and on this day from San Diego to El Cajon from the remnants of Hurricane Norma.
Frequent lightning caused numerous power outages and property damage, and ignited small fires.
Rainfall was 0.55" in two hours at Lemon Grove and 0.97" total.
Very frequent lightning caused numerous power outages and property damage, and ignited small fires.

1958: Daily rainfall record set at Fresno with 0.24" recorded.
This was the second measurable rainfall event of the month which resulted in some damage to raisins and other crops.

1949: Bishop, CA recorded a high temperature of 99° F, setting a daily record.

1945: It was 26° F in Idyllwild, the lowest temperature on record for September.
This also occurred the next day on 9.24.1945, on 9.20.1965, and on 9.21.1968.

1934: 3" of snow fell at Sierraville (Sierra Co.), its earliest ever measurable snowfall.

1908: Wettest calendar day for the month of September on record in Bakersfield, 0.6" of rain.

1904: San Francisco received 3.09" of rain while San Jose recieved 1.15".

1903: Bakersfield dipped to 31° F, earliest freezing low on record here.

1895: The morning low temperature at Reno, NV, was 27° F.
