[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (August 4)

2014: The afternoon of August 4th was very active as storms fired along a moist-dry boundary that worked east across southeast California and southern Nevada with the strongest storms developing right along the moist-dry boundary.
Extensive flooding caused damage at Death Valley Junction, California resulting in damage to the 91 year old historic Amargosa Opera House. Around 1240 PM that day, a tornado formed near Nelson Peak, Nevada.
This tornado was rated EF0 and was the first tornado in Clark County since April 2001.
Showers and thunderstorms deposited heavy rain in portions of the Las Vegas Valley on the afternoon of August 4th resulting in extensive street flooding in some areas.
A total of 0.75" of rain fell in 15 minutes at an automated gauge near Tropicana and Torrey Pines.
A swiftwater rescue was conducted at Decatur and Oakey. A large cinderblock wall was knocked down in one neighborhood by floodwaters. A number of vehicles were stalled in floodwaters across the valley.
Flooding also took place along Grand Teton Avenue in northwest Las Vegas after heavy rain fell on the Carpenter 1 Burn Area and runoff occurred.
Thunderstorms also produced flash flooding on the afternoon and evening of August 4th from Esmeralda County to Nye County to Clark County along Highway 95.
The highway was washed out just north of Beatty, Nevada.
However, heavy rainfall of 1"-2" in an hour at the lower end of Lee Canyon on Mount Charleston resulted in the most dramatic images that day.
The heavy rain ran off the road washing across Highway 95 and washing cars into drainage ditches.
At least one car was flipped over by floodwaters.
A bus along with 30 cars was also stranded on Highway 95 near Lee Canyon.     

2008: A severe thunderstorm produced dime to nickel sized hail in La Quinta, as well as a 63 mph wind gust.

2002: The Pines Fire which began near Julian in late July when a helicopter clipped a power line, intensified rapidly in early August.
Hot weather of 100° F -110° F degrees and extreme drought contributed to fire intensity, with rates of fire spread reaching more than 3,000 acres per hour at times.
The fire cost $22.6 million to contain, scorched 61,690 acres and destroyed 187 structures.

1998: Santa Rosa had a high temperature of 106° F.

1997: A major heat wave started on 8.2 and ended on 8.7.
Temperatures hit 121° F in Thermal, 118° F in Borrego Springs, 113° F in Brea, 110° F in Riverside and Ontario, and 101° in Julian.
The low temperature was 93° F in Palm Springs on 8.5.
Five deaths were attributed to this heat wave.

1993: A thunderstorm produced 78-mph winds, 0.25" hail and over 2" of rain in less than 1 hour at Mt. Charleston, NV (near CA-NV border NW of Las Vegas).

1978: The high temperature at Reno, NV, reported a high of 102° F.

1973: Woodfords (Alpine Co. near Markleeville) recorded 1.2" of precipitation

1961: A trace of rain fell at Bakersfield on this date, setting a record. 
The year 1961 holds the distinction of having the most daily precipitation records in the month of August in Bakersfield with 4 such records still in the books.

1961: A heavy thunderstorm hit near El Capitan Reservoir producing 1.75" of rain in 90 minutes.
Los Coches and Quail Creeks flooded Lakeside.
Another heavy thunderstorm hit south of Yucca Valley.
Flash floods hit the area south of Yucca Valley and also blocked Highway 62 with mud and debris up to 2' deep.

1955: Thunderstorms strike Barton Flats and Needles.
Flash floods washed out a road and caused minor slides around Barton Flats.
In Needles, flash floods washed out Highway 66 and damaged railroads.
100 people were made homeless as many washes turned into raging torrents.

1898: A thunderstorm dropped hail as large as quail eggs in Las Vegas, NV.
