2011: Park Service officials reported 14 vehicles damaged by lightning at Porcupine Flat, Yosemite National Park in Mariposa Co.
2011: Thunderstorms produced 0.75" hail at Big Bear City and Highland.
A funnel cloud was observed near Perris. Hail accumulated near Wrightwood and minor flash flooding covered roads in Pinon Hills.
2011: The Tamarack Fire started just northeast of Yosemite Valley in Mariposa County at 1912 PDT.
This wildfire was caused by extensive lightning.
It burned 480 acres and wasn't contained until 10/6/11.
There were no fatalities or structures lost.
Cost to suppress was $75,000.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 18 power poles were blown down along Highway 98 near Rood Road, east of Calexico.
The strong winds also caused a semi-truck to roll over on Highway 98.
Additionally, two semi trucks rolled over on Interstate 8 and State Route 7.
The wind gusts were estimated to be at least 60 knots.
2011: Monsoonal thunderstorms pummeled Las Vegas Valley and environs. Thunderstorm winds estimated at 50 mph downed a few powerlines in Downtown Las Vegas knocking out power.
A few neighborhoods along Decatur Blvd. near Altaview and Charleston also lost power.
Lightning struck a home 2 miles WNW of Downtown Las Vegas on Living Rock Ave. causing $1,000 damage.
Lightning also struck a two-story home in the Las Vegas suburb of Spring Valley causing $5,000 of roof damage.
Half-inch diameter hail was report near North Las Vegas.
North Las Vegas Airport report 0.52" of rain in 22 minutes and 0.26" of rain in 5 minutes.
Flashflooding in the suburbs NE of Downtown Las Vegas led to a swiftwater rescue at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Las Vegas Blvd.
Floodwaters built up behind a backyard wall at a home in Henderson, NV (SE suburb of Las Vegas) near Horizon Ridge and Mission which strained the wall to the point that it broke. A 4-foot wall of water and mud rushed into the yard of a home.... flooding most of the first floor and inundating a swimming pool. Mud and debris washed onto nearby Pangloss Street.
1999: A near-stationary thunderstorm over the Vallecito Mountains dropped over 4" of rain in 2 hours.
Flood waters washed out Split Mountain Road.
One of the washouts damaged nearly 200 yards of road.
1983: Peak of late-season hot streak: Record highs of 106° F at Fresno and 109° F at Bakersfield.
Fresno had highs of 100° F or better each day from the 11th through 18th of September.
1971: It was 100° F in Palomar Mountain, the highest temperature on record.
This occurred on eight other occasions.
1971: Salinas had a high temperature of 102° F.
1959: Strong thunderstorms rumbled throughout the mountains and deserts of Southern California, producing intense winds, hail and heavy rains.
Utility lines and highways were damaged and numerous freshly planted fields in the Imperial Valley were flooded.
An intense thunderstorm hit east of Joshua Tree City between noon and 1 pm.
Heavy debris flows came from the canyons and damaged numerous homes. Sand more than 3 feet deep covered some properties.
1956: The high temperature in Bishop, CA was 88° F.
This ended a streak of 84 consecutive days with temperatures reaching 90° F or hotter.
1913: A thunderstorm drenched Goldfield, NV (due east of Mammoth Lakes), with 2.2" of rain resulting in homes floating away and two women drowning.
