Tuesday the group received a spam from Grouply, claiming to be from "Gino
Jara", a member of this group. The moderators stopped that message, but you
may have received a companion message directly; the ones I received were
titled, "Gino Jara wants to friend you on Facebook", but were actually
invitations to join Grouply.
It bears repeating here: Grouply has from its beginning taken actions that
make the whole thing very suspect--that's as kindly as I can put it. For
example (at the beginning, at least), Grouply would replace your email
account with their own (if you were fool enough to give them your password,
a condition of Grouply membership--I believe that may have changed). This
allowed Grouply to enter any Yahoo! Group you were a member of and scrape
the address list, invite other members to join Grouply, anything you as a
member were allowed to do--and to do this all in your name!
(Repeating the warning you've been told many times, and hopefully have
heard: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give your password to anyone. NOT EVER.)
While I understand that Grouply may have changed their modis operandi, in
the opinions of all Yahoo! Group owners I've heard from, nobody trusts
Grouply.
Repeating the policy of this group (and several other YGs): If a member here
is found to be a member of Grouply, the member will be banned here. We
believe we must take this kind of firm action to protect the group and
members from spam and possibly worse. We know Grouply will spam the group;
we don't know what other threat they might pose.
We urge you to have nothing to do with Grouply. Period. If you receive a
message with "Grouply" in the subject, don't open it but delete it
immediately. Avoid all contact with Grouply.
