06/26/2010 | 0650 | Today marks the 20th aniversary of the Dude Fire. Six firefighters lost their lives. Following this event, "Look Up, Look Down, Look Around", a fire behavior indicator system, was developed. Additionally, Paul Gleason formulated "LCES" * now a safety standard for wildland firefighting. "We honor these firefighters today by learning about the lessons they learned the hard way and by using this tragic event as a tool to keep ourselves and our crews safe on the fireline." |
*Moderator's Note: L.C.E.S." stands for Lookouts - Communications - Escape Routes - Safety Zones or more specifically "Select lookouts, set up a communications, choose escape routes, and select safety zones"
Additionally, just an FYI, the Dude Fire occurred in Arizona.
