Parent Advisory Group Meeting Minutes
September 9, 2010
Principal's Report:
We had a very smooth opening of school this year. The administration team is full this year and there seemed to be fewer problems than in past years.
The young man who was arrested didn't ever make it to the school. He claims he was bullied. Now that we have a full counseling staff, counselors will be able to go into classrooms and work on some of these issues with students. Mr. Thiebaut is heading up the writing of some grants to bring programs to the school. One possible program is called "Rachel's Challenge." Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine shootings. The program consists of a one hour school presentation of video and audio footage of Rachel's life and the Columbine tragedy aimed at motivating students to positive change in the way they treat others.
At last count, the number of students enrolled at Volcano Vista is 2165. The optimum number of students for our school is 2200 with a maximum capacity of 2500.
Classes are large this year. Some classes have more than 40 students. On the 20th day of school, there will be some leveling changes to reduce those class sizes.
Ms. Garcia responded to questions from parents:
- The internet program for parents (i-Parent) to access their children's grades online is not yet ready. The district is ironing out some kinks that will make it more user friendly for teachers so they do not have to enter grades in two different computer programs.
- If parents have a question or concern about specific curriculum being used, they can contact Valerie Atencio after speaking with the teacher.
- Susie Weidner is responsible for the printing of the calendar. All of the departments were directed to submit their information for the agenda prior to the end of the school year last year. She then submitted it to the publisher. Clubs or groups that need to announce a change to what is written in the agenda can email Susie so it can be announced.
- All textbooks are supposed to be covered to protect them. Students will be fined if their book covers are damaged when they turn them in.
- A question arose about gifted children being exited from the gifted program. Federal monies only are distributed if gifted services are received (i.e. if students are currently enrolled in a gifted class). Additional questions about this may be directed to Robin Troup, Assistant Principal over Special Education.
