Re: [californiadisasters] Re: [California's Earthquake Forum] It's a HOAX!

Not only have I had a high quality formal education, but I make it a point to
further educate myself on whatever I find to be interesting, especially in the
Emergency Services realm. It's awfully handy working at a library, where I have
direct access to the online catalog, and I can wander into the "back stacks" for
those other odd books that aren't in general circulation. I also tend to watch a
LOT of TLC, Discovery, NatGeo, Science Channel, and the Military Channel when
I'm not watching News, NASCAR, or SpeedTV.

There are folks with the USGS, CalTech, and various UC, CSU, and other
universities that have done, or are doing, extensive work on trying to forecast
earthquakes. Even those guys, with PhD's and dozens of years of research can't
definitively predict when, where or how strong earthquakes are going to be.

I love it when people from east of the Rockies give me the "Aren't you afraid of
earthquakes?" line. I ask them if they're afraid of tornadoes, hurricanes, or
blizzards; to which the answer is usually "no". I explain to them that weather
can be predicted; you know when the stuff is coming. With earthquakes, you know
where it's going to hit (along the fault lines), but you don't know when or how
bad.
