[californiadisasters] 1,000-Plus Attend Disaster Preparedness Day

1,000-plus attend Disaster Preparedness Day

The natural gas line explosion that killed several people and leveled a San Bruno neighborhood this month is what drove many to attend San Mateo County's sixth annual Disaster Preparedness Day on Saturday in Menlo Park.

Originally organized in 2005 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina when local leaders worried about the public's ability to handle a major catastrophe, this year's event was expected to draw between 1,000 and 2,000 people to the U.S. Geological Survey campus.

While there were booths featuring everything from SWAT teams to vendors selling earthquake kits, the most intense questions were directed at emergency service workers who demonstrated how to shut the gas flow to a home.
