[Geology2] 4 Strong Quakes Tuesday Morning at Campi Flegrei near Naples Italy

Four earthquakes deep beneath the surface of the earth occurred on Campi Flegrei in Italy. The four earthquakes registering 4.8, 4.8, 5.6 and 5.7 happened during 7:30am and 8am this morning. Campi Flegrei is a 13km wide caldera situated west of Naples in Italy and was declared a regional park in 2003.

The caldera contains 24 craters and volcanic edifices. One of the craters on Campi Flegrei is inside Lake Avernus and has a capability of producing a VEI 7 eruption. Now these strong earthquakes on the caldera might indicate that volcanic activity is starting once again. On September 29 AD 1558 the volcano Monte Nuovo on the southeastern shore of Lake Avernus erupted and destroyed a village.
