2005: Late-season high Sierra snowfall event from the 8th through early on the 9th, totals included 16" at Tunnel Guard and 13" at Volcanic Knob.

2001: A heat wave started on 5.7 and ended on this day.
Temperatures hit 109° at Palm Springs, Thermal, and Borrego Springs, 103° at Hemet, and 102° at San Bernardino.

1977: The great Mother's Day storm produced heavy rain after three years of severe drought.
Some areas received more than three inches of rain.
Local flooding resulted.
3.69 inches of precipitation fell in Palomar Mountain, 2.47 inches in Idyllwild, 1.99 inches in Big Bear Lake, 1.49 inches in San Diego, and 1.06 inches in Victorville, each the greatest daily amount on record for May.
1.50 inches of rain fell in San Diego starting on 5.8 (1.49 inches) and ending on this day (0.01 inch), the wettest 24-hour period on record for May.

1922: Yosemite Valley received 7.5" of snow, its' biggest May snowfall on record.
