[Geology2] Antipodal Mantle Plumes: A Mechanism [1 Attachment]

[Attachment(s) from Ben Fishler included below]

The purpose of this email is to present a paper entitled "Large Impact & contemporaneous Antipodal Mantle Plumes:  A Mechanism for Cause & Effect." This paper is attached in PDF form.

At long last I get to work Elvis Presley into the antipodal volcanism argument ... yes, it is a gratuitous reference, but, in a discussion of geology, it's always nice to bring in words of wisdom from the King of Rock.

The mechanism is based primarily upon the changes in behavior of materials when they are subjected to extreme vibration. I believe that there is a certain threshhold level of extreme vibration and duration of that extreme vibration that allows, on a temporary basis, for the virtual elimination of the power of friction.

Once this frictional release threshold has been reached, then a mostly impermeable region, such as the Earth's mantle, can be breached and rapidly penetrated by hot liquid olivine under great pressure.

The attached paper goes into this mechanism in much more detail.

Obviously, I will have to make lots of changes to make in my book on the internet based upon this paper. I will have to change the mechanism. Also, I believe that I will have to present my scenarios for impacts and uplifted continental formation in the time periods older than 100 MYA as matters of informed speculation, rather than as matters of factual certainty.

Again, I am always looking for comments.

Regards,

Ben Fishler
