California Wildfires Prompts State of Emergency
Sunday, Aug 3, 2014 • Updated at 10:22 AM PDT
California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency Saturday as more than a dozen wildfires destroyed homes, forced evacuations and damaged infrastructure, all among severe drought conditions, The Associated Press reported. Brown's emergency proclamation said that the wildfires' magnitude was beyond the control of any single local government and he secured a federal grant on Saturday to cover 75 percent of the cost to fight a wildfire that started in Oregon and crossed into California. The fire in Oregon Gulch has consumed nearly 33 square miles since it began Wednesday, has destroyed at least three homes and threatened about 270 structures on both sides of the state border, authorities said.
