[californiadisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (May 17)



2008: The high temperature at Reno was 96° F.

1997: It was 91° F in Palomar Mountain, the highest temperature on record for May.
This also occurred on 5.28.2003 and 5.31.2001.

1996: Outflow winds from collapsing thunderstorms cause gusts to 47 mph in Fresno.

1987: Reno, NV, recorded 1.76" of precipitation.

1949: "Severe" dust storm struck Hanford ahead of an approaching cold front.
This front helped to produce showers that resulted in hefty precipitation totals across parts of the Sierra in a short time period.
The Wishon Power House recorded 2" of rain in just 15 minutes.
A small tornado also occurred about 10 miles northwest of Fresno causing unspecified damaged exceeding $1,000 (in 1949 dollars).

1896: San Jose had a low temperature of 32° F. 

1892: A springtime heat wave hit Southern California starting on this day and ending on 5.19.
Temperatures met or exceeded 95° F in LA each day.
