QUANG NAM (VNS) — An earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale struck mountainous district Bac Tra My in the central province on Monday.
Chairman of the district's People's Committee Tran Anh Tuan said the quake did not cause any damage in the district.
According to Ha Noi-based Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics, the epicentre of the quake that lasted five seconds was at a depth of 7.4 kilometres.
This is the second quake in the district this year; the first quake of 2.6 intensity occurred on March 21.
Among the spots that experienced the earthquake included the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant in the district.
Last Friday, Nong Son District recorded a 2.5 intensity tremor.
According to the Tra Doc commune people's committee, the nearest commune to the hydro-power plant in the district, four quakes of 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, and 3.6 intensities were recorded last July.
In 2012, experts concluded that the series of tremors in the area was due to seismic activities caused by water stored in the hydropower plant reservoir, and the magnitude of earthquakes had not exceeded the reservoir's capacity to withstand quakes (of up to 5.5 magnitude).
About 25 tremors were recorded near the hydropower plant's location from October 3 to November 16 in 2012.
The biggest quake to be recorded so far has been of 4.7 magnitude on the Richter scale in 2012. It affected 13 districts and townships in Quang Nam and damaged more than 1,000 houses and 20 public sites.
Bac Tra My District, 52km from Quang Nam's capital Tam Ky, is home to over 20,000 people, mostly of the Co Tu ethnic group, living in five communes. — VNS
