[Geology2] Earthquake Simulation Conducted At LAX

Earthquake Simulation Conducted At LAX

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A dramatic earthquake simulation was held Monday morning to test the stability and durability of an iconic building at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The Theme Building is bordered by a horseshoe of terminals and is center court at LAX. Its structure has been undergoing renovations since a half-ton block of plaster fell from one of the arches in March 2007.

Scientists wanted to see if their $10 million earthquake-retrofit worked, so they used a machine built was UCLA to simulate a 2.0-magnitude earthquake.

Computer models will be used to see if the building can withstand an 8.0-magnitude temblor.
