Case in point: The People's Temple (led by Jim Jones) started in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County (just north of Ukiah) before moving to the Bay Area and later, fatefully, Guyana in South America where it all ended tragically.
Another case in point: the Heaven's Gate Cult (led by Marshall Applewhite) started in the San Diego County area and ended tragically in Rancho Santa Fe.
*Side-note trivia: Polly Klass' murderer (who shall not be honored by being named here) lived in Redwood Valley for a time.

Seems like a good place to suggest* that we drop the May 21 thread/topic
altogether now.
(Since the suggestion is coming from a moderator, let's read that as
"suggest".)

IMHO: While some of these folks tend to be troublesome in their
irresponsible behavior, there is good that comes out of these situations.
It may lead us to think about our own beliefs and actions towards others.
Moreover as emergency responders and managers, it may get us to practice
what we preach (re: preparedness). As long as it doesn't lead to self
destruction, e.g. Jim Jones, David Koresh, Mr. Applegate, etc.
