It is worth noting that California has a long history of being the seat of genesis for fringe religious movements and sects including extremist ones. Case in point: The People's Temple (led by Jim Jones) started in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County (just north of Ukiah) before moving to the Bay Area and later, fatefully, Guyana in South America where it all ended tragically.

Another case in point: the Heaven's Gate Cult (led by Marshall Applewhite) started in the San Diego County area and ended tragically in Rancho Santa Fe.
