Sherpa Fire caused by hot embers from a burning log

Wildfire scorched 7,474 acres

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Hot embers from a burning log ignited the Sherpa Fire on June 12, 2016.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department released the official cause of the fire on Tuesday. They are ruling the cause as accidental.

"A resident living on La Scherpa Ranch was burning a log in his indoor fireplace when the wind picked up, causing smoke to fill the residence," stated the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. "The resident then carried the burning log to an outside water faucet, dropping hot embers on the ground, which ignited the vegetation fire."

Fire officials said they knew the cause of the fire early after the Sherpa Fire began, but it's only until now that they were able to release the information citing a closed investigation.

The Sherpa Fire scorched 7,474 acres before it was fully contained nearly a month later in July 2016.
