People living in urban areas need not fear wildfires. People at any real
elevation need not fear even the worst imaginable tsunami. Only people on or
under steep slopes need fear landslides, and only people in low-lying areas
need fear flooding. Tornados are rare and hurricanes all but non-existent.
But in an earthquake, there's no place to hide. These other disasters may
damage or destroy a dozen or a hundred homes, but The Big One is likely to
destroy thousands, and if that's not bad enough, a lot of the infrastructure
also.
I'd say that "fear" of earthquakes is not entirely a phobia for those of us
living in CA.
Meanwhile, I wonder: How many who "fear" earthquakes have done anything to
prepare for them?
