Eclipse on Sunday will display 'ring of fire'
Sunday, May 20, 2012LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- For the first time since 1994, the western United States will be treated to a rare solar spectacle when the moon slides across the sun, creating a "ring of fire."
Those planning to view the partial eclipse in Southern California on Sunday, which starts about 5:24 p.m., are being warned to either wear protective eyewear or attend planned viewing events to avoid risk of eye injury.
For 3 1/2 hours, the eclipse follows an 8,500-mile path with the ring-of-fire phenomenon lasting as long as 5 minutes, depending on where it's being seen from.
The Griffith Observatory says it's very excited about the eclipse and holding a free viewing party in the afternoon.
