They recommend vibram soled shoes. The soles have to be stitched on. If they were glued on then the soles will just peel right off. The flows are active right now and I believe there is a tour guide that will take people out there, no idea what he charges though. I went with a staff member of CVO. It's a long trek out to where the lava is, but it's worth it! Imagine walking on hot glass for hours on end going up and down one giant mound after another.
