Sitting on a tectonic fault line, Gurgaon is highly susceptible to earthquakes. Those who reside or work in the city will agree because tremors hitting Gurgaon have become quite frequent recently.
To take safety measures up a notch, Gurgaon will now get a state-of-the-art earthquake warning system that will alert its people within 30 seconds of the first seismic wave. The primary waves often miss detection by humans - only animals and birds can sense them. These travel faster than the secondary waves, which on the other hand, are much stronger. They can be felt by humans too and are the main cause for destruction above the surface.

Gurgaon is home to nearly 1,100 hi-rise buildings - both official and residential. Hence, it's imperative for the city to have an effective alarm system in place lest it gets destroyed by an unforeseen seismic activity.
After Chandigarh, Gurgaon is the second city to be getting an 'early earthquake warning and security system' that will not only raise an alarm but also shut down electricity, gas supply, lifts, and activate all the other connecting alarming systems there are, reports The Hindustan Times.

"We hope to get the system installed this month. There was a need for such a system in Gurgaon as the region (National Capital Region) falls in seismic zone IV making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes," said Director-General SP Gupta of Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA).
The system will be installed in Sector 18 on the HIPA campus and will cost Rs 40 lakh. This 'onsite system' will later be upgraded to a public alarm system that will cover a radius of up to 6 km.
In Chandigarh, the system is installed on the premises of the new secretariat.

The alarm system will help rescue people to safety before the more destructive second seismic wave hits. It will also aid in better coordination of rescue efforts.
According to Abhay Kumar Shrivastava, Head of HIPA's Centre for Disaster Management, the alarm system was attuned to sense a magnitude of 6 on the Richter Scale but HIPA got it readjusted to 5.
A joint venture of German company Secty Electronics GmbH and Terra Techcom Private Limited, the system was tested by the Haryana government in March at CSIR-Structural Engineering and Research Centre, Chennai.
