| Notes: | On this morning in 1906 at about 5:12 a.m. a major earthquake along the San Andreas Fault Zone (hereafter referred to as SAFZ) in North California occurred. This event caused shaking up to a minute in some areas. The quake itself was a 300 mile-long bi-lateral rupture of the SAFZ starting near the Golden Gate and rupturing simultaneously up and down the fault with the northern rupture ending near the Triple Junction off Cape Mendocino and the southern rupture extending into the San Juan Bautista area of San Benito County in Central California where the nature of the fault changes transitions into the Creeping Segment of the SAFZ. Maximum horizontal displacements for this quake ranged from 20-28 feet. Maximum intensities ranged up to IX on the Modified Mercalli Scale. Magnitudes can only be guessed at but the best put it at about 7.9 Moment Magnitude and up to 8.3 local magnitude. Most of the damage attributed to this quake was actually caused by the firestorms triggered by the quake which raged for three days. Quake and firestorms combined killed anywhere between 3,000 to 5,000 people although at the time these figures were supressed and distorted by the City Fathers so as to not scare any settlement or investment away from The City. This quake was felt across most of California and into Oregon and Nevada. Although this event is popularly known as the San Francisco Earthquake despite the devastation and death meted upon communities outside the Bay Area such as Santa Rosa and even Willits to the north not mention all around the Bay Area proper but outside San Francisco proper. | |
