Re: [Geology2] Prepare yourself, CA, for a new fracking adventure!

Hi Allison, Sorry I cannot for the life of me remember where the places were although Texas may very well have been one of them as I have some friends who are from the Houston area.

Some of the other water shortages have been reported because of contamination of large water supplies by greedy companies who plainly do not care about residents and their welfare and just go merrily on their selfish way doing as they will without a thought about the possible consequences of their actions.
Some of these I believe though, have already been taken to court and had huge damages issued against them???

So my point is, why oh why do more so called intelligent people want to go down the same path?

No, I definitely wasn't thinking about long ago wars being fought over water shortages either although I don't doubt at all that you are correct about them happening.

On the rare occasions that I bother to watch tv these days it is more than likely there where I have picked up these snippets of info I suppose as I prefer world news and documentaries when I do get time to sit and watch the box.

Answering Kim's question too, it WAS the municipality or larger bodies that I was thinking of initially paying the bill, but, it would only come back down to the local residents of the areas in question who would eventually end up footing the costs etc. Soylent Green situation or not.

It doesn't really matter where humans live - water IS a precious commodity and should be respected as such by ALL Countries and Nations and not wasted in such a foolish manner.

Oh yes and while I think about it - I awoke this morning to find out this frackin' nonsense is going to be allowed to go ahead over her in G.B. too! What a load of #@~#@#~?<>*&^%'s (translated to idiots) we have over here as well!

Thanks for listening and responding now it's time to go and harrass my local M.P's if I can find them!!! LOL

My Regards,
Loz

Here in WI, those of us in the Milwaukee county limits get to use Lake Michigan water. Those in the very next county over, Waukesha, have to use well water and ugh...it is horrible. They are always lobbying to get our water too.
Maybe you are thinking of Texas, my former home. Water rights are real important and some areas are real dry. Wars have been fought over the water. But that was a long time ago...where did you get this information? I can't think of anywhere there is a severe water shortage right now or supplies. Last summer Houston had a pretty bad water shortage... but there were only the usual rules. Water at night, etc. The concrete cracked in many patios and swimming pools and house foundations everywhere suffered. Is that what you heard? Allison

We do not yet have any dire water shortages but we do have a nasty habit of being wasteful with water in some regards although we have made great strides. However, no place is paying millions for water unless you are talking about some municipality or larger body and in that case that cost is spread around over the entire population. We are not yet in a Soylent Green type situation. ;-)

Hi Lin! Can you clear something up for me please? Every now and then I pick up items from America that say some of the people over there are short of water and to get decent supplies, they will have to pay millions for it.
Now I don't know the parts of America that is in such short supplies but wouldn't it be more practical for those who are in dire need, to be getting this water shipped to them rather than it being wasted by pouring it into a volcano just to see what happens???
After all said and done, we do more or less know the outcome anyway, Don't we???

P.S. This query isn't meant to be a political statement at all but I do find it utter madness when people need water.

Geothermal experiment on Newberry Volcano gets OK

The federal government has given the final OK to plans by a geothermal energy company to pour millions of gallons of water into the ground on the flanks of the Newberry Volcano south of Bend.
The Associated Press
BEND, Ore. —
The federal government has given the final OK to plans by a geothermal energy company to pour millions of gallons of water into the ground on the flanks of the Newberry Volcano south of Bend.
The Bulletin newspaper (http://bit.ly/IZvxeO) reports the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has concluded the experiment planned for this October by AltaRock Energy will not cause any significant earthquakes or contaminate local groundwater.
AltaRock is demonstrating a new technology for fracturing hot rocks to create the reservoir of fissures needed to produce commercial levels of geothermal energy.
The project has been given $21.5 million in federal stimulus funds.
BLM concludes that any earthquakes won't be felt in LaPine, and a mile of solid rock between the test well and local groundwater will protect the aquifer.
