[californiadisasters] Re: [LAFD] Are You Prepared for a Zombie Apocalypse

Kim:

Other departments have posted this too over the past few years. I like it as it is very true. Several years ago when DHS upped the color code a notch for some reason my office (EMA dept) was getting calls from lots of worried people. My staff and I made the same presentation to all who called saying:
1) Remember it does not matter what the cause, prepare for consequences.
2) It does not matter to you what causes a power outage for example, whether a severe winter storm takes down cables, a earthquake damages the power plant or a terrorist attacks the power plant you need to be able to cope with a power outage
3) pointed out the same applied to shortage of food, staying warm etc.
4) Being in the Boston area we then asked them what they did to prepare for a major winter storm. Most of them had a very good grasp of what preparations were needed as to lighting, batteries, non-perishable food supplies, medicines etc
5) Most were pleased to realize tha the things they had done for many years before a major storm hits would be what they would need to cope with the consequences of terrorism.
6) we always included a bit about NO CANDLES. Many TV stations still talk about batteries and candles and we would stress that when phones are dead and streets blocks is not when you want to have a fire.

All this seemed to help the people cope with their preparation plans

As for zombies, some very savvy scientists from Univ of Ottawa helped the public health people look at pandemic planning by using zombies as a model. The concept is unusual but the differential equations and Jacobians are spot on. Good stuff. I emailed Kim a copy of their paper and he may be able to post it to files. If not. The title and authors are:
WHEN ZOMBIES ATTACK!: MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF AN OUTBREAK OF ZOMBIE INFECTION
Philip Munz, Ioan Hudea, Joe Imad, Robert J. Smith

Google should be able to find that.
