Title: | 1952 Arvin-Tehachapi Earthquake
Date: | Sunday July 21, 2013
Time: | 5:00 am - 5:00 am (GMT-08.00) Pacific Time (US & Canada)
Location: | Kern County, Califorinia
Notes: | At 4:52 A.M. this morning in 1952 the largest earthquake to strike California since 1906 rocked Central and Southern California. The quake was caused by a failure of the White Wolf Fault in Kern County and was M7.3-M7.7 depending upon what scale one is using to measure it. Twelve people were killed in the event which devastated Tehachapi and caused numerous casualties at the women's prison there. A woman was even killed in the Los Angeles area when she stepped on a live powerline. Damage to Bakersfield was moderate although it experienced even greater damage from an aftershock some weeks later that was epicentered much closer to the city than the main event. There was slight damage to a structure in both Las Vegas and San Diego and water swashed in tanks in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. The railroad running up through the Tehachapi Pass was heavily damaged with some tunnels even being "daylighted". Bear Mountain was lifted a foot by this quake.
