Webinar #5: Gender, Disaster, Policy, Politics
Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 1 pm EST
Please join us for the next of our Webinar Series. We will have two speakers presenting on the topic:
The Long Walk to Gender Equality: Rhetoric and Realities in DRR Policy and Practice
This presentation takes a critical look at the current policy trend which promotes gender equality as 'smart economics' adopted by international financial institutions, agencies and organizations. It will explore the implications of this market-oriented approach on disaster risk reduction policy and practice. Using case studies, it will show that the rhetoric on gender equality remains far from reality, thus the need for a more engaged, reflexive and critical gender scholarship in disaster and development.
Speaker: Kristinne Sanz, Global Disaster Network member
Global Rights, Enforcement and Accountability Aspects on Gender
Despite a few decades of continuous work on gender issues in disasters, progress achieved is dismal, remaining challenges are enormous. With the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), the global guidance framework for disaster risk reduction, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) reaching their timelines in 2015, extensive consultations are taking place across the globe to define Post- 2015 development and disaster reduction agenda. This presentation aims to capture the highlights from the consultations focusing on the rights, enforcement and accountability aspects on gender and women's issues, and to explore the avenues for gender equity and women as a force of social change in disaster risk reduction.
Speaker: Madhavi Malalgoda Ariyabandu - Regional Programme Officer, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR)
