[californiadisasters] Note re hi pressure gas mains

There has been discussion as to information as to location of high pressure mains.

The companies that operate the mains are required by federal law to notify the police, fire and emergency management each year of the route of the mains in the community, emergency contact numbers for the company (not the numbers the public call but public safety only numbers direct to operators)and numbers for other questions. They also ask the agencies involved to verify that the emergency numbers of local agencies are accurate. They also ask for locations of schools, nursing homes, hospitals, theatres etc close to the line.

I was a EMA director for 27 years and the company with a line in my city would each year have a breakfast or luncheon meeting for all the public safety officials in the region where they would provide information on the line, what should be done in emergencies etc and would send us home with notepads, pens and coffee mugs with the emergency number printed on them. As I type this I am sipping tea from a mug with the gas co. emergency number in big type on the side.

I was only at one high pressure leak. It did not ignite but we did evacuate a school and homes close by. I can understand the people who thought a plane had crashed as a break causes a high pitched whistle and a machine gun like rattle as gravel, pebbles, rocks blown out of the hole come down on homes and cars.

Hope this helps understanding of the situation.
