[californiadisasters] Re: Canyon Incident - Kern Co.

This incident is now officially up to 2,000 acres, unofficially up to 3,000 acres.

Here are the two incident reports and the links to their webpages:

The Canyon Fire was reported at approximately 2:00 p.m. today and is located in the Lower Kern River Canyon, below, (and west) of Lake Isabella. The fire started near Delonegha on the south side of the Lower Kern River. The fire quickly spread to both sides of the Kern River, jumping over the Old Kern Canyon Road and back across Highway 178, resulting in actively burning fire on both sides of the two roads as well. Within an hour the fire spread to over 200 acres calling for evacuations of recreational sites along the Lower Kern River, including Remington Hot Springs, Black Gulch, Mill Creek, Hobo, Sandy Flat and Miracle Day Use area. Several outfitter guide (boating) companies camp sites were also evacuated. Highway 178 is presently CLOSED - one-lane will open tomorrow (Monday, Sept. 13th) at 10:00 a.m.

Fire fighters from the US Forest Service, Kern County Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management (under Unified Command) are battling the blaze as on the ground and in the air with 8 airtankers, 5 helicopters, multiple crews, water tenders, dozers and engines. The fire is presently 2,000 acres and burning in a southeast direction.

The fire is presently 2,000 acres - crews are working through the night in an attempt to contain this fire.

Cal Trans is staffing the closures along Highway 178 at Borel and the mouth of the Kern River Canyon (Bakersfield side).

This incident is exploding all over the place and is now a structure threat and put at 700 acres per the Hotlist..

One flank of the fire is running to the top of a small mountain right in front of the Breckenridge Cam for which there is a link provided below in the previous post.

A short time ago this fire generated a pyrocumulus cloud.

Highway 178 is closed indefinately due to a fire in the Kern Canyon, in Kern County. The forest Service has called a second alarm. Smoke from the Breckenridge camera looks bad.
