I live about a mile from the fire and expliosion but happily on the far side of 280 and south of the incident. I was picking up my wife in San Francisco and we'd gotten on the 280 extension On our way home when we saw the plume rising from the far side of the hill. I thought it was a grass fire above Pacifica. Imagine our shock as reports said maybe a gas station I go to regularly was the source.
As for the posts regarding reports of planes and whatnot, you get all kinds of speculation and you report what you know at the time. Me, i was saying to family members there was an explosion. At least THAT was true. But initially, yes, people thought a plane went down. As the gas rushed to the break, these people heard a roar and thought: PLANE. San Bruno borders SFO and so it is a natural assumption.
Thanks to all the emergency services who helped get this thing under control.
