[californiadisasters] CAL ShakeOut Update: We're All in This Together!

Join Us for the Largest Earthquake Drill in U.S. History The 2013 Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill is now four months from today on October 17 at 10:17am, and already more than 6 million people have been registered!  Registration has more than doubled in the last month as school districts, organizations, and individuals have renewed their commitment to participate again this year, along with many first time participants.  Thank you!

We're all in this together! Over the past 5 years we've seen that when more people register, many more are motivated to participate and get prepared. How many people will practice earthquake safety and get prepared this year because you, your organization, or your school is leading the way?

If you plan to participate but have not yet renewed your registration for 2013 (or if you are not sure), please take a moment to log in today at ShakeOut.org/california.

(Schools and districts: to make sure you are registered before your summer break, please renew your registration for this year's ShakeOut today.)

Planning Your Drill

Now is a great time for participating organizations and schools to consider these questions:

  • If you are planning a drill for many people, is it on your organization's calendar?
  • Which level drill will you organize this year?  (See our drill manuals with instructions for multiple levels of drills.)
  • Have you described or updated your drill plans on your ShakeOut profile for 2013?
  • What preparedness actions can you also take before ShakeOut day?  Simple instructions for how to participate are available for a variety of ShakeOut participant categories, and include custom preparedness information. In addition, FEMA has developed a comprehensive set of publications for families, schools, businesses, and others. The USGS also provides information for every state as well as worldwide, resources to learn about earthquakes, and more.
California Dept. of Insurance made milkshakes during their 2012 ShakeOut drill
California Department of Insurance Deputy Commissioners, Erika Sperbeck and Chris Shultz, made milkshakes for employees to enjoy while watching a 3-minute video on earthquake preparedness.
  • Have you visited the updated ShakeOut Shop? All items now have new reduced prices for purchases of larger quantities.  The site has been set up to make it easy for you to provide t-shirts, stickers, and buttons and much more to involve and acknowledge your participants.
  • How can you make the drill fun for your participants?  Examples include raffle tickets taped under desks, playing the ShakeOut Drill Broadcast during your drill, having contests between departments for the best drill participation, and even making milkshakes for employee preparedness trainings! Stories of what participants have done in the past can be read at shakeout.org/california/share.
  • Who in your community might also participate in your drill or in their own, such as your neighboring businesses, your school's parents, your vendor partners, etc.?  In a real earthquake, their level of preparedness may affect your ability to recover quickly, so encourage them to register their own ShakeOut drills!

Who will ShakeOut with you?

Drop, Cover, and Hold On graphicA great way to help your community, your employer, and others get prepared, reduce injuries, and speed recovery is to encourage them to register to participate in the Great California ShakeOut, in another ShakeOut region, or anywhere else via the "Other States and Countries" option. Spanish speakers anywhere can register and find resources at ShakeOut.org/espanol.  Help spread the word about ShakeOut at family gatherings, community events, and work meetings, and online with email, facebook, or twitter. You can also place one of the ShakeOut web banners on your organization's website, display posters in your office, distribute flyers, and use other materials available on the ShakeOut Resources page.

This year ShakeOut is expanding further with several new ShakeOut regions being established. In total more than 30 states and territories may be involved on October 17!  Some states and countries are holding ShakeOut drills on other days. In total more than 20 million people worldwide are likely to participate in 2013.

Thank you for your continued participation and for your commitment to disaster preparedness!
