LAL2 means a slight chance of wet thunder storms mostly cloud to cloud. LAL3, 4,5 all mean wet thunder storms within a 15 mile area mixed with cloud to cloud and some ground strikes mostly negative strikes. LAL 6 in the forest fire fighting world can be our friend, this is when we would make our money chasing lightning strikes. LAL 6 means mostly dry lighting mixed with negative and positive strikes, ( positive strikes are ground to cloud down strikes) most of these are well ahead and at the end of a thunder storm. Positive strikes cause most of your fires. we have 3 kinds of lightning,
1) cloud to cloud
2) cloud to ground (negative and positive)
3) hot lightning ( cool to see most of the time it is a yellow to red color strike, will see a ball of fire at what ever it hits)
When I use to work in the fire lookout the lookout would get hit all the time. It makes a streaking sound follow by the boom that scares the heck out of you.
