RE: [californiadisasters] Re: Portable Generators Pose Problems in Disaster Preparedness Plabe ns

This brings up another piece of trivia if you are planning on a purchase.  American made generators are listed at the power they can create 24/7 without a strain.  Offshore generators (my Honda) are rated for peak only.  So a 2 KW generator is not always a 2 KW generator.

Inverter type generators produce a very clean MSW (Modified Sine Wave) signal which is highly compatible with electronics (computers are notorious for being picky).

In my case, it plays well with the inverter in my RV so if the RV wants more (coffee pot, microwave on), it kicks up the output and the generator responds to that increased load and kicks up as well.  They adjust to each other; the generator idles under low loads (quiet!!).  The RV inverter produces Pure Sine Wave (even cleaner) and runs from a bank of batteries.

Some folks use similar systems at home and their power is always on for their essentials.

As to the noise issue, neighbors can get jealous. When buying some emergency generators a few years ago I discovered that they all seem to come in models to run at either 1200rpm or 1800rpm. The 1200rpm models are much quieter but tend to be physically larger for the same KW rating.
