Smoke from the Powerhouse Fire darkened the sky over the Tehachapi valleys on Saturday afternoon as firefighters continued to battle the blaze that started Thursday afternoon northwest of Green Valley in the Angeles National Forest.
According to an update from the US Forest Service at about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, the fire has grown to more than 3600 acres and is 15 percent contained.
Firefighters from Kern County, including Stallion Springs Station 18, are among nearly 1000 working to fight the fire that is burning in heavy brush and chaparral.
The fire is burning about 40-50 miles due south of the City of Tehachapi, as the crow flies, but on the other side of the Tehachapi mountains.
The fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. Earlier Saturday it made a major run to the west and north under moderate winds with very dry conditions and high temperatures.
Lake Hughes Road has been closed from Cottonwood campground on the north to Lake Castaic on the south. San Francisquito Canyon remains under a hard closure; Bouquet Canyon Road is nude a soft closure open to residents only. Elizabeth Lake Road is under a soft closure open to residents only.
A Red Cross evacuation center is located at Marie Kerr Park, 39700 30th St. W. Palmdale, 93551 for residence. The Large Animal Shelter located at Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 5210 W. Avenue I, Lancaster, CA 93536 has been discontinued but will be put back in place should the need arise.

Estimated containment is not until June 5 because the fire is burning in steep and rugged terrain. Powerlines are located in the vicinity.
