English prof. here... just an fyi, the plural of virus is viruses. The etymology of the word in Latin is that the root form was used as a collective noun; however, after much debate and debacle, the decision is in. It's simply viruses.

Also, just because HIV is a primate disease now does not in any way limit it's having been in other critters in the past. It is quite conceivable that 10 million years ago it wasn't even a monkey disease but was primarily found in another mammal type. Viri are notorious for their mutations.
