2018: An early season storm brought thunderstorms and heavy rains to the San Joaquin Valley region.
Numerous problems were reported throughout the region with downed trees and powerlines, flashflooding and debris across roads, etc.
In particular, in the Ferguson Fire burn area in Mariposa County a number of problems were reported.
Large rocks were reported on Bull Creek Road near Ferguson Bridge.
Debris moved onto State Route 140 and into the Indian Flat Campground near El Portal.
Trees and 3 feet of mud covered State Route 140 7 miles west of El Portal.
In Kings County and near the Kings-Kern County line, flash flooding occurred on State Route 41.
Mud and debris were covering the westbound lanes on State Route 41.
2011: Isolated thunderstorms developed across portions of Imperial county during the afternoon hours on October 3rd.
The storms generated strong and gusty outflow winds in excess of 50 mph which were sufficient to blow down a number of trees and power poles.
2010: A thunderstorm near Merced downed a tree down and caused roof damage to a house in Yosemite Lakes Park.
2000: Pot gardens went up in smoke as the Weinstein Fire (in Tehama Co.) chased the marijuana growers out of the woods.
Firefighters who finished containing the escaped prescribed burn also stumbled onto a large marijuana garden, the fifth found in the remote area in about a month.
As the flames spread, Mexicans began emerging from the nearby forest.
But officials had no evidence connecting the 16 men to any gardens and released them, giving them each a ride into town, Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker said.
1997: Second day in a row of flash flooding in Pahrump, NV, (just east of Death Valley) led to a State of Emergency being
declared, damages totaled $2.7 million at the time.
1995: A strong Diablo Wind event raked the mountains and coastal areas of the North Bay Area into Mendocino County.
A fire started along Highway 20 between Hwy. 101 and Upper Lake and burned over the mountains towards Ukiah.
At Inverness Ridge, a campfire escaped becoming the Mt. Vision Fire which burned 45 homes in Inverness and burned over Inverness Ridge and across Pt. Reyes National Seashore to the ocean charring 12,354 acres.
1987: Santa Ana conditions brought extreme heat to the coast.
It was 108° F in LA on this day and on 10/4, the record high temperature for October.
On this day unofficial readings of 109° F in El Cajon and 106° F in Chula Vista, Fallbrook and Santee were reported.
It was officially 104° F in San Diego and Vista, and 103° in Santa Barbara.
The Vista and Santa Barbara readings represent a monthly high temperature record.
1986: Earliest measurable snow on record in Kyle Canyon on Mt. Charleston (NW of Las Vegas, NV), with 0.4".
1980: A strong ridge of high pressure brought record heat to the region.
It was 101° F in Victorville,the highest temperature on record for October.
This also occurred two days later on 10/5.
It was 115° F in Indio and 113° F in Borrego Springs.
Each is the highest temperature on record for October, and each also occurred the previous day on 10/2.
A 103° F reading in Campo set the monthly high temperature record for October.
1940: 20" of snow fell at Truckee.
1917: Saint Helena had a high of 104° F -- a record for the month.
1916: Second day of 4 day streak of record low maximum temperatures at Fresno that lasted from the 2nd through the 5th.
Highs were 58° F, 62° F, 64° F and 64° F respectively; these record low maxima made the lengthiest cold snap for so early in the season.
1912: A dry spell began in Bagdad (San Bernardino Co./Mojave Desert) on this day lasting 767 days and ended on 11.9.1914.
(Southern Pacific RR employees kept this debated record).
Strangely, on this same day Palm Springs recorded record rainfall.
