[CaliforniaDisasters] On This Date In California Weather History (October 23)

2016: A widespread elevated thunderstorm event occurred across Southern California lasting 24 hours from this day to 10/24.
It produced 2,500 cloud-to-ground strikes.
Several power poles were downed or burned due to lightning strikes.
One strike hit a football player in El Cajon, but he survived.

2008: The low temperature in Richmond was just 73° F.

2007: Very strong Santa Ana winds developed on 10/21 and continued through this day.
A gust of 85 mph was recorded at Fremont Canyon, 79 mph at San Bernardino, 75 mph at Descanso and Mira Loma, 74 mph at Fallbrook and Rancho Cucamonga.
Some locations experienced winds at least 45 mphfor more than 36 consecutive hours.
Winds caused at least $60 million in damage and destruction to buildings, fences, vehicles, etc.
The devastating wildfires of 2007 were fanned by these winds. These fires caused one million Californians to evacuate, the largest mass evacuation in California history.
One notable fire that began on this day was the Poomacha Fire.
The result of a house fire, the Poomacha Fire would ultimately scorch 49,410 acres and destroy 216 structures.
Near the coast, the Ammo Fire would also spring to life on this day, and burn 21,084 acres on Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base before being extinguished.

1982: Straight-line winds cause damage in Kearney Park (Fresno).

1976: Strong thunderstorms with local amounts of rain over 5" in a 24 hr period, and over 6.5" of rain in a 48 hr period, produce flash flooding in some sections of Yuma County, AZ.
A number of secondary roads are damaged.

1965: Chula Vista reached 101° F, a record high temperature for the month.  

1961: It was 10° F in Big Bear Lake, the lowest temperature on record for October.
This also occurred on 10.29.1971.

1959: It was 103° F in Riverside, the latest date in the season on record to hit 100° or higher.

1956: The peak wind speed of 71 mph in Las Vegas set the highest reading recorded in October.
The high winds blew down numerous trees, broke some windows and tore down a large tent for a craft show in Las Vegas.

1954: China Lake NAS recorded a 71 mph wind gust, highest on record for the month of October.
This feat was repeated on this same date here in 1956.
