2017 Tubbs Fire Anniversary
When:
Tuesday, 8 October 2019
Where:
Mayacamas Mountains - Napa & Sonoma Counties
Organizer: Kim Patrick Noyes
Details:
The Tubbs Fire was a destructive wildfire in Northern California during October 2017. At the time, the Tubbs Fire was the most destructive wildfire in California history, burning parts of Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties, inflicting its greatest losses in the city of Santa Rosa. (It was surpassed in destructiveness by the Camp Fire of 2018.) The Tubbs Fire was one of more than a dozen large fires that broke out in early October 2017, which were simultaneously burning in eight Northern California counties, in what was called the "Northern California firestorm." By the time of its containment on October 31, the fire was estimated to have burned 36,810 acres (149 km2); at least 22 people were believed to have been killed in Sonoma County by the fire.
The fire started near Tubbs Lane in the rural northern part of Calistoga, in Napa County. It incinerated more than 5,643 structures, half of which were homes in Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa's economic loss from the Tubbs Fire was estimated at $1.2 billion (2017 USD), with five percent of the city's housing stock destroyed. The Tubbs Fire also incurred an additional $100 million in fire suppression costs.
After an investigation lasting over a year, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) determined that the Tubbs Fire was "caused by a private electrical system adjacent to a residential structure" and that there had been no violations of the state's Public Resources Code.Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubbs_Fire
2017 Redwood Valley Complex Anniversary
When:
Tuesday, 8 October 2019
Where:
Potter Valley & Redwood Valley - Mendocino County
Organizer: Kim Patrick Noyes
Details:
The Redwood Complex Fire, which started on October 8, 2017, was the result of two fires merging — the Potter Valley and Redwood Valley fires. The Potter Valley fire started at approximately 10:35 p.m. in northwest Mendocino County and joined a second fire that ignited at approximately 1:30 a.m. on October 9. Because of the steep terrain, fuel moistures, and northwest winds the fire blazed for 21 days and was not fully contained until October 28, 2017.
Unfortunately, the consequences of the fire have been devastating for Mendocino County neighborhoods and business districts.
- 36,523 acres burned
- 545 structures were destroyed
- 43 structures were badly damaged
- 8,000 people were forced to evacuate the area
- Hundreds of animals were relocated, including dozens of dogs and cats, and 50 horses
- Schools in the Ukiah Unified, Potter Valley and Willits Unified districts were closed
Most tragic, the fire has caused the loss of life and serious injuries. To date, nine deaths have been reported, ranging in age from 14 to 88. Additionally, more than 20 individuals have been hospitalized with severe burns.
Below is a map showing the far-reaching scope of the fire and communities is has impacted.

2017 Sulphur Fire Anniversary
When:
Wednesday, 9 October 2019
Where:
Clear Lake - Lake County
Organizer: Kim Patrick Noyes
Details:
The Sulphur Fire, which is part of the Mendocino Lake Complex, started at approximately 11:59 p.m. on October 8, 2017. The fire originated along Sulphur Bank Road off Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks, near the Clearlake city limits at Clearlake Park. The fire quickly spread to the Elem Colony and into the city of Clearlake. The fire blazed for 19 consecutive days till it was fully contained on October 27, 2017.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the California Public Utilities Commission and Cal Fire. Notably, PG&E’s management of its electrical infrastructure and its maintenance of high voltage wires and poles is being evaluated, and information has emerged showing that PG&E may be at fault. In 2015, PG&E was found to have caused the Butte Fire in Amador County which claimed two lives, burned over 70,000 acres and destroyed over 921 structures. The cause was a poorly maintained tree that came into contact with a power line.

The Sesnon Fire (also known as the Porter Ranch Fire) was a wildfire that broke out near the oil fields of Oat Mountain, north of Porter Ranch, California, on Monday October 13, 2008. The cause of this fire was a power line falling onto dry brush near a drainage area. A state of emergency was declared by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on October 13 in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties The fire burned more than 22 square miles (57 km2) and cost US$7.9 million to fight. This fire occurred with two others, one in San Diego County and another at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley. One person lost their life due to the low visibility on highways because of the smoke from the fire.
The Porter Ranch (Sesnon) fires sent shock waves through the southern California area, raging out of control and burning thousands of acres each day it kept burning. The governor of California as well as nbclosangeles.com reported that 62 buildings were destroyed in the fire, including 15 homes and nbclosaneles.com reported that 41 vehicles were destroyed.
