[californiadisasters] Re: Admin Read: San Bruno Incident

The latest from various sources:

120 homes damaged and 53 destroyed

one confirmed fatality with possibly two others

dozens injured with critical burns to several people

the disaster area is in a microclime known as the "San Bruno Gap" and is highly wind-prone which contributed to fire spread

From my own knowledge: NTSB has primary responsibility for the investigation of this incident as they do all pipeline mishaps

This is what we know as best as we can at this point based upon reports online that I have seen:

Obviously dozens of homes have burned.

Two are confirmed dead.

Five critically burned and requests for blood donations going out across the Bay Area.

Fifteen others are reported in area hospitals.

This was caused by a 24-inch natural gas main that catastrophically failed.

The gas main has been shut off and the dancing fountain of fire is extinguished.

Other fires remain in the neighborhood of course.

We probably won't know much more until sunrise tomorrow.

My policy from the very beginning of California Disasters in May 2007 is that we compete with no other groups but actually benefit other groups by functioning as a nexus between various groups that otherwise would not ever cross-connect due to their specific roles and themes.

Right now the Bayscan Yahoo Group has ceased it's latest flame-war and gone from being Flamescan back to being Bayscan and tonight is the source of some great information: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bayscan/

As usual the Hotlist is hot with the scivy: http://wildlandfire.com/hotlist/showthread.php?t=15909

Bay Area TV and radio stations are another good source for information, esp. the two main news radio stations in the Bay Area, to wit, KCBS-Radio 740AM and KGO-Radio 810AM and don't forget the Chronicle at sfgate.com or the Mercury News at mercurynews.com.

Achtung Gruppe!

I appreciate all your newsy and informative contributions here tonight while I was out on the town and thank you all.

However, at times tonight things got a bit too chatty and chippy which was unnecessary on-list or even at all.

It is to be expected that in the initial minutes and even hours of an incident like this that there will be confusion and even unintentional misinformation, ergo the "fog of war".

However, please be mindful this group has over 1,500 members and I daily keep our membership trimmed of the dead weight of members with bouncing Yahoo Groups accounts if they neglect to respond to my repeated reactivation requests. If I did not do this our membership would be closer to 2,000 but I'm not interested in looking like a bigger group than we actually are.

That means that most of our members are actually here and following the list activity to varying degrees.

We have members from a broad array of societal backgrounds from Joe Blow the Plumbers like me to first responders to politicians to media types to scientists to students and so on.

Please be mindful of this and considerate of other people and think in terms of what would benefit the most people while being the least disruptive; think in terms of an information cost-benefit ratio and where your comments will fall within that ratio.

Therefore, please only post hard facts based upon confirmed or even unconfirmed reports provided they come from reliable sources and articulate your information as clearly as possible to avoid confusion.

Unconfirmed reports of first responders who are down or missing are verboten as they are on all respectable groups like this one.

This topic does NOT need to go to the discussion group but please keep it tight gang.

Thank you all for your cooperation and contributions.

Sincerely,

Kim Patrick Noyes
List-owner
